The year 2020 has brought a significant crash to the saffron market, both in bulbs and dry flowers, due to the pandemic. The director of the Center for Promoting Agricultural Cooperation between China and Central Asian countries and Eastern Europe (CNSSSCEE), Vasil Gelev, predicts a prolonged economic crisis that will last for several years, during which saffron may lose appeal as a luxury good and be overshadowed by basic necessities. The competitive pricing of saffron from traditional producers like Afghanistan and Iran makes it difficult for Bulgarian saffron producers to sell their produce.
