The pisciculture in São Paulo may lose R$ 75 million due to the U.S. tariff hike, says the association.

Fish farming in the State of São Paulo may see a drop of R$ 75 million in export revenue by the end of the year due to the new 50% tariff that the United States has applied to the entry of Brazilian tilapia into the country.

According to a statement from the Association of Fish Farmers in Paulista Waters and the Union (Peixe SP), in 2024 Brazil exported R$ 200 million in tilapia to the North American market, with São Paulo accounting for 35% of the sales. According to the executive secretary of Peixe SP, Marilsa Patrício, 60% of these sales occur in the second half of the year, "increasing the urgency of the problem," she says in the statement.

To mitigate the damages, Peixe SP also informs that it continues to act on several fronts. "The association is pushing for a more direct political dialogue with the US and supports the qualification of local industries to access the ProAtivo program, which offers the release of accumulated ICMS credits, and the Desenvolve SP, which provides specific credit for companies affected by the tariffs..."
