As of August 15, 2024, Vietnam's tuna exports to the EU increased by 28% compared to the same period in 2023, reaching over US$133 million. While canned tuna, which makes up nearly 39% of the total export turnover to the EU, experienced growth in the first five months, it has been declining sharply since June. This decline is due to the exhaustion of the preferential tariff quota and challenges in sourcing pure-origin skipjack tuna, crucial for canned tuna production. Consequently, major EU importers such as Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, and Italy have reduced their imports of Vietnamese canned tuna.
