The Russian Ministry of Agriculture is proposing an extension of the existing ban on roach fishing in the Caspian Sea, the Volga, and its watercourses in the Astrakhan Region and water bodies of Kalmykia until December 31, 2025. This ban, which applies to both industrial and amateur fishing, is in response to the critical state of roach stocks due to factors such as shallowing of the Caspian Sea, insufficient water discharges from hydroelectric facilities, and poaching. This proposal is part of a broader effort to restore roach stocks, focusing on regulating amateur and recreational fishing, protecting spawning grounds, and ensuring the timely introduction of a fish shelf. The initial ban was introduced in 2023 and has been extended to include the period from April 20 to 30 in 2024, with plans to further extend it until the end of 2024, excluding these 10 days.
