Mexico is planning to increase its fishery and aquaculture production through the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Program 2020-2024, with a particular focus on boosting sardine production, which makes up 40% of the country's total production. This fish is not only nutritious but also easy to prepare and accessible. The program aims to increase production by 15.52%, improving the profitability of small-scale fishermen and aquaculture farmers by 76% and improving the state of fisheries by 22%. The sardine fisheries in Sonora and Sinaloa have been certified as sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council.
