The Spanish fleet operating in the Eastern Pacific maintains its fishing opportunities for the next two years

The Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) has decided to extend the regulatory measures for tuna fishing in the eastern Pacific for two years, so that the Spanish fleet, the only one in the European Union operating in this area, will be able to maintain its chances of catching tuna. The measure benefits 38 longline vessels based in Galicia and four purse seiners from the Basque Country that catch bigeye, skipjack and yellowfin tuna. The 108th session of the IATTC commission, held from 4 to 6 September in Panama, confirmed the effectiveness of the measures adopted two years ago due to the current good health of the bigeye and skipjack stocks, and has therefore decided to extend them for two more years.
