The Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) has extended regulatory measures for tuna fishing in the eastern Pacific for two years, supporting the Spanish fleet, the only EU operation in the area. These measures, in effect for the 2022-2024 period, include restrictions on fishing effort, capacity, and days, with a 72-day ban in the convention area. The measures have proven effective in conserving bigeye and skipjack tuna stocks. Additionally, the commission has approved measures for the safe release of live sharks, will consider strengthening or relaxing yellowfin tuna measures, and has supported two EU measures focusing on improving control of catching vessels and farms.
