The Argentine Squid Owners Association (CAPA) has proposed to the Argentine Deputy Secretary-General of Fisheries to start the 2025 squid fishing season earlier, on January 10, in the area south of 44 degrees south latitude. This suggestion, backed by scientific data from the Argentine National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (INIDEP), aims to boost catches by targeting the summer spawning population. Additionally, CAPA is worried about potential collaborations between Santa Cruz Province and Chinese companies to enhance port infrastructure, which they fear could lead to unfair competition and harm the Argentine squid industry. CAPA intends to release a public statement with other industry groups urging the government to reconsider this cooperation.
