The article provides an overview of the opening months of the pistachio season for the United States and Iran, detailing their production figures, inventory levels, and market performance in the first three months.
The US pistachio industry has seen success in the early days of the season, producing approximately 480,000 tons and selling around 146,000 tons, with a significant portion, 117,000 tons, being exported primarily to Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. The Middle East and Africa region, including countries like Turkey, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Israel, received about 12,000 tons. Europe's main recipients were Germany, Spain, Italy, Poland, the UK, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands, totaling 28,000 tons.
On the other hand, Iran's pistachio season has also started strong, with production estimated at 200,000 tons and 91,000 tons sold in the first three months, largely due to exports to the Far East, India, the Indian subcontinent, and Central Asia, as well as re-export markets like Turkey and the UAE. The Middle East also received a share, with Iraq being the main recipient, and Europe, particularly Germany, received about 1,000 tons. Notably, Iran's exports to China more than doubled compared to the previous season, reaching 24,089 tons, while US exports to China remained relatively stable at 3,526.6 tons.
Both countries have substantial inventory balances as they head into the next nine months of the season, with the US at 390,000 tons and Iran at 140,000 tons, indicating a strong supply position for the markets they serve.
