The Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG) of the Coquimbo region calls on horse owners to take extreme safety measures, after confirming the first cases of equine infectious anemia (EIA), a serious disease that affects equines. In response to this situation, the Service has activated the established protocols, which include the total quarantine of the property —with a prohibition of entry and exit of horses— and the sanitary euthanasia of the animals that tested positive, in order to prevent the spread of the disease. EIA is a viral disease that affects only horses, mares, donkeys, and mules, with no risk to humans or other species. In Chile, the contagion usually occurs through the shared use of instruments with blood residues, such as needles, syringes, or sharp tools.
