The Valencian Community is experiencing a significant decline in honey production, with an estimated 30% drop from the past, resulting in potential losses for beekeepers of over 6.5 million euros. This is due to a combination of factors including adverse weather conditions, which have affected the quality and quantity of monofloral honey production, and the use of unauthorized phytosanitary products in citrus fields toxic to bees. The situation has been further worsened by the Covid-19 pandemic, with the closure of the HORECA channel and mobility restrictions impacting the sale of bee products. The Valencian Community is home to 2,459 bee farms, which make up 7.5% of all farms in Spain, with 12% of Spain's hives.
