Australia is set to launch the world's first synthetic vaccine for foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) and contagious lumpy skin disease (LSD) in August 2023, thanks to a government investment of $6 million. The vaccine is crucial as current FMD vaccines cannot be used in Australia due to the live virus, risking the country's FMD-free status. The national government has also allocated an additional $65 million over the next two years to boost biosecurity and train technicians to combat these diseases. The first conference in New South Wales brought together 120 experts to discuss the threat of FMD and LSD, with concerns about climate change potentially aiding the spread of LSD in Australia.
