The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has identified Peru as the Latin American country with the highest per capita fish consumption, at 22 kg per year, followed by Chile with 13.2 kg and Brazil bringing up the rear with 10.6 kg. This is attributed to Peru's long coastline, providing ready access to a diverse range of marine life. The FAO also acknowledged the Maldives as the global leader in fish consumption, with a remarkable 87.30 kg per person annually, followed by Iceland at 84.39 kg. This consumption pattern reflects the strong cultural connection between these countries and the sea.
