Tomato producers in Extremadura, Spain, are planning to cultivate approximately 23,500 hectares of crops this season, expecting to yield over 2 million tons of fresh tomatoes. However, the Union of Extremadura has raised concerns over the violation of Article 9.c) of Law 12/2013 by three major industries, which have contracted at prices lower than the production cost per ton. The Union plans to report this to the AICA and is demanding €18 million in compensation. A class action lawsuit is also being considered to recover the unpaid amounts.
