On May 24, 2023, in Naga Hammadi, a significant event took place under the supervision of key officials, including Major General Ashraf El-Dawdy, Governor of Qena, and Dr. Hazem Omar, as 200,000 fry units of Nile tilapia, silver carp, and grass carp were released into the Nile River, as part of a larger plan to release one million fry units from May 24 to May 29. This initiative aims to increase fish stocks, support sustainable natural fisheries development, enhance food security, and promote animal protein production in Egypt. The fry units, reared at the Nagaa Hammadi fish hatchery, were selected for their high vitality and ability to resist weeds, contributing to improved water flow and increased fish stocks in the Nile River. This move is expected to have a positive impact on the national economy by meeting citizens' fish consumption needs, reducing the production-consumption gap, and providing job opportunities for fishermen.
