Tidal flat high-income variety ‘razor clam’ seed release in South Korea

The Jeonnam Provincial Institute of Ocean Science and Technology released 1.5 million of its own-produced razor clam seeds into the waters of Suncheon Bay on October 30 to secure the main income base of Suncheon Bay and increase the income of the fishing village. The razor clams produced in the waters of Suncheon Bay are consistently popular with enthusiasts for their unique flavor and savory taste. They are a regional filial variety recognized internationally for their excellent marketability and quality due to their natural habitat environment, and are exported to Japan. The average annual production was 3,577 tons in the 1990s, but it plummeted to 392 tons in the 2010s and 8 tons in 2023 due to continuous harvesting, climate change, and slow resource recovery.
