REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Coordinating Minister for Food Crops Zulkifli Hasan (Zulhas) announced Indonesia's target to achieve protein self-sufficiency by 2026 while commemorating National Fish Day.
"Next year, we must achieve protein self-sufficiency. Happy National Fish Day," said Zulhas during the 2025 National Fish Day Summit, held in Jakarta, Sunday (11/23/2025).
Zulhas conveyed that protein plays a crucial role in enhancing the nation's intelligence, particularly for the younger generation currently in education.
When measured by Intelligent Quotient (IQ), Zulhas stated that the average IQ in developed countries is already above 109 points, while Indonesia's IQ is still in the 90s range.
To become great like developed countries, he said, the government must strive to achieve food self-sufficiency, especially in protein.
"We must achieve self-sufficiency, then serve it at our children's tables, train them to be smart, thus we change. Their nutrition, their IQ will change..."
