The Department of Consumer Affairs in India has reported a significant decrease in the retail prices of tomatoes by over 22% within a month, from Rs 67.50 per kg to Rs 52.35 per kg as of November 14, 2024. This price drop is largely due to improved supply, with tomato arrivals leading to a nearly 50% decrease in modal prices at Azadpur mandi and similar trends in other benchmark markets. The total annual production of tomatoes is projected to increase by 4% from the previous year, reaching 213.20 lakh tonnes in 2023-24. The fluctuation in tomato prices throughout the year is influenced by adverse weather conditions and logistics disruptions, as the crop is highly perishable and susceptible to weather damages. Currently, favorable weather conditions and a good flow in the supply chain have contributed to the observed price decrease.
