Tongaat Hulett, a leading sugar producer in Zimbabwe, is planning to increase its sugar output by 7% in the financial year ending March 2025, following a period of production challenges that resulted in record lows last year. The company's managing director, Tendai Masawi, announced expectations to produce between 395,000 and 400,000 tonnes, up from 375,000 tonnes in the previous year, attributing the recovery to improved weather conditions and overcoming currency and spares shortage issues. This comes as Tongaat Hulett's South African operations have entered business rescue proceedings. The company's Zimbabwean operations are supported by a network of 1,200 farmers and are making significant progress in a 4,000-hectare sugar project called 'Kilimanjaro', which aims to employ underprivileged members of society and has already cleared and prepared 2,700 hectares of land for cultivation.
