Researchers in northern Australia are exploring the potential of two new crops, industrial hemp and sesame, with trials indicating good adaptability in the region. Ahead of the conclusion of a three-year trial, farmers in the Big Rivers region, encompassing Katherine in the Northern Territory and Kununurra in Western Australia, have been invited to field days to explore the possibility of incorporating these high-value crops into their operations. The trials, supported by AgriFutures Australia and various departments, are evaluating different varieties of the crops, with industrial hemp requiring permits due to its low tetrahydrocannabinol content. Sesame, known for its high market value and suitability for Australia's climate, is being researched for its high-yielding, non-shattering varieties.
