In the first half of 2020, the volume of fruits and vegetables traded at Seoul Garak Market, the largest public agricultural product wholesale market in Korea, saw a slight decrease of 1.4% from the previous year, reaching 1.4 million tons. Despite this, the total transaction value increased by 9.4% to KRW 2,1744 billion, driven by higher unit prices for vegetables. The transaction volume of fruits decreased due to cold damage, while vegetable trade volume decreased due to reduced cultivation areas. Daea Chung, a wholesale market corporation, saw an increase in transactions, particularly with radishes and cabbage. The market also saw a decrease in transactions between other wholesale market corporations and the Seoul Metropolitan Government. The most traded items were onions, radish, cucumbers, green onions, and cabbage, with strawberries commanding the highest price. Imported agricultural products made up 9.2% of the total trade volume, with a slight decrease in imported fruits and vegetables. The article emphasizes the need for wholesale market corporations to implement shipment incentives and prepayment performance to increase production and shipping volumes.
