El Cholar is a locality in the Ñorquín department, in the province of Neuquén. It is located about 64 kilometers west of the city of Chos Malal and has approximately 1,100 inhabitants. The province, characterized by extensive livestock production based mostly on the raising of goats and sheep, has a picturesque and ancestral practice: transhumance. This sociocultural activity takes place in the departments of the mountainous region, and seeks to take advantage of the different environments of the valleys and plateaus with respect to the mountainous area. This practice involves about 1,500 shepherd families from the central and northern parts of Neuquén. It is an activity that allows the animals to be moved to the high mountain area to take advantage of the pastures in summer, while their wintering place recovers the forage while also improving the number of animals and the quality of their products.
