In 2020, Turkey experienced a significant increase in its banana production, with a 32.8% rise compared to the previous year, reaching 728,133 tons. This growth is attributed to 13 projects aimed at enhancing efficiency and quality, implemented by the Alat Horticultural Research Institute in Mersin, with two additional projects by the Agricultural Research Institute of the Western Mediterranean. The majority of banana varieties grown in Turkey, which now accounts for one-third of the country's domestic needs, are registered and developed by the Alat Horticultural Research Institute. The rights to grow seedlings of various banana varieties have been transferred to the private sector, boosting exports, which increased from 11 tons in 2016 to 22.4 tons in 2020. The main importers of Turkish bananas are Georgia, Syria, France, and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. However, banana imports to Turkey saw a decrease from 209,393 tons to 152,951 tons in the same year.
