In January 2025, Bulgaria experienced a significant increase in lamb prices across the board, with live weight lambs costing 4.4% more at 11.59 BGN/kg and lamb meat seeing a 6.6% rise in wholesale prices to 25.27 BGN/kg VAT included. Retail prices for lamb meat surged by 14.3% to 27.76 BGN/kg VAT. Despite these increases, the Ministry of Agriculture reported a decrease in sheep and goat meat production by 18.1% to 1,430 tons in the first nine months of 2024. Import levels of sheep meat also saw a decline, except from Germany, New Zealand, and Italy, while lamb exports were predicted to decrease by nearly 70% by September 2024.
