In response to the new zero-catch restrictions on pollock, the U.K. Environment Secretary Steve Barclay has announced a compensation scheme aimed at supporting fishers in Southwest England who are significantly impacted. This scheme is designed to compensate approximately 50 vessel owners, especially those for whom pollock constitutes at least 30% of their 2023 income, offering them 50% of the total value of their pollock landings for the year. This initiative is part of the government's broader efforts to assist British fishers and promote a sustainable, resilient fishing industry. Additionally, affected fishers will have the opportunity to access grant funding and participate in a scientific study to gain deeper insights into pollock stock structure.
