In the 2020/2021 marketing year, Ukraine saw a significant increase in onion exports, reaching a record high in eight years with 34.1 thousand tons exported for a total of $ 6.5 million. Despite maintaining low prices domestically, economists like Andriy Yarmak at the FAO believe the growth in exports is not a significant success due to the lack of focus on quality and systematic export promotion. The geographical reach of Ukrainian onion exports also expanded, with half being exported to EU countries, particularly Romania. Other significant importers included Belarus, Azerbaijan, Moldova, Iraq, Turkey, Bangladesh, and several African countries. The Ukrainian Fruit and Vegetable Association (UPOA) emphasizes the need for strategic efforts to improve export pricing and quality, especially in light of the diverse range of countries importing Ukrainian onions.
