In 2020, Ukraine achieved a record high in seed exports of grain and oilseeds, earning $18.7 million, a 1.5 times increase from the previous year, driven by high global demand and prices. Despite a decrease in grain seed exports, the increased revenue was largely due to a 65% rise in corn seed sales, reaching $13.4 million. The main importers were CIS countries, with the European Union showing a growing interest. Wheat and rye exports remained steady, and for the first time, Ukraine exported sunflower seeds, bringing in $1.2 million. The seed market in Ukraine is undergoing changes, with foreign companies selling seeds grown in Ukraine and the country starting to gain a foothold in international seed markets. However, the export of domestic selection seeds relies heavily on supplies to the CIS and the EU, and needs continued state support.
