The Uttar Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has made a record payment of Rs 1.71 lakh crore to sugarcane farmers, marking the largest payment to farmers for this crop in the state's history. This payment underscores the government's commitment to ensuring fair compensation to farmers, as it has paid over Rs 1,70,938.95 crore to more than 45.74 lakh farmers from 2017 to April 2022, a figure that surpasses the previous governments' payments by three times. The Yogi Adityanath government has also reopened sugar mills, leading Uttar Pradesh to become the country's top sugar-producing state. The state's sugar industry, which is crucial for India's economic development, employs approximately 65 lakh people and is located in a region known for its favorable climatic and soil conditions for sugarcane production. To ensure the industry's long-term growth, the government is establishing research and development units to develop disease-resistant and high-yield sugarcane plants.
