Since the beginning of the year, Switzerland has seen a rise in the prices of bread and pasta, with bread prices increasing by 2.4% from January to March and pasta prices approaching 10.5% due to a combination of general cost increases and a poor harvest in 2021. The increase in bread prices is attributed to factors such as transport, mill costs, and energy, with the war in Ukraine contributing a smaller percentage. The war has, however, led to a 15% increase in the cost of raw materials for bakers. Millers are also concerned about the quality of the next harvest in Switzerland, which could lead to higher prices and the need for increased tariff quotas for bread grains. Distributors such as Coop and Migros have warned of further price increases, while the French-speaking Consumer Federation is monitoring for excessive price increases by distributors.
