The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, consisting of 20 countries, is a significant market for Uruguayan beef and sheep meat exports due to its high importation of these products and low average tariffs. Despite having sanitary authorization, Uruguay has only notably exported to Israel, with Saudi Arabia and Lebanon being other minor recipients. The lack of commercial preferences is identified as a challenge for Uruguay in these markets, particularly due to the region's growing urbanization, westernization, and increasing disposable income, which are changing dietary preferences and import patterns. Halal certification is necessary for exporting beef to several MENA countries, which have Muslim majorities, presenting an opportunity for Uruguay to expand its presence in the market.
