With the blockage of U.S. cherries entering China, a large quantity has flooded the Hong Kong market, causing prices to drop to their lowest level in 20 years. Cherries from Washington state are retailing at HK$40 per pound (36.5 yuan/pound) in the Yau Ma Tei fruit wholesale market.
A sales representative from Kingo Fruit, a Hong Kong importer, said that last year, the Yau Ma Tei market could sell about 8,000 boxes of air-shipped cherries per day at its peak, while this year the daily sales have reached a maximum of 12,000 boxes. An industry insider said that although the U.S. cherry supply is high, the market is rather sluggish, and prices are low. In July last year, the wholesale price for a 5 kg (11 lb) box of U.S. cherries was 400 HKD (364.5 yuan), and now it is only 260-280 HKD (236.9-255.1 yuan), a drop of up to 35%.
The total value of fruits directly imported from the U.S. to Hong Kong in April increased by 118%. However, from February to April this year, the value of fresh cherries transshipped from Hong Kong to the mainland decreased by 72% year-on-year.
