The US has imposed import restrictions on certain Australian poultry and byproducts from Victoria following the detection of highly pathogenic avian influenza on two farms. The restrictions, in effect since May 22, prohibit the importation of unprocessed avian products, poultry, commercial birds, ratites, and hatching eggs from Victoria. However, imports of pet and zoo birds may be permitted under an import permit with a 30-day quarantine. These restrictions, extended to cover regions with flu outbreaks in Japan and Canada, could slightly impact the local industry but are expected to have limited direct impact as Australia does not export fresh chicken meat to the US. The outbreak has led to the culling of over 500,000 chickens and has raised concerns about economic impacts through potential supply chain disruptions and the possibility of bird flu infection in beef, although health agencies maintain that the risk to the public remains low.
