U.S. pistachio production is about 1.1 billion pounds, down nearly 30%

In 2024, the area of pistachio trees in California reached a record high of about 488,000 acres, an increase of 25,000 acres from the previous year. In the past two decades, this area has increased nearly fivefold and surpassed walnuts in 2021 to become the second largest nut in terms of fruiting area among all types of tree nuts in California. In 2024, the area of almonds in California was 1.38 million acres, accounting for 62% of the total tree nut area, followed by pistachios (22%) and walnuts (16%). The area of pistachio fruiting is expected to continue to expand in the next few years. ACP estimated in 2024 that there were about 124,000 acres of unfruited pistachios (immature 1-5 years after planting) and 7,500 acres of new plants in California.
