A new National Aquaculture Centre and Commercial Farms facility, costing US$10 million, has been launched in Ghana to boost domestic fish production and reduce imports. The centre, located at the Diary Farms in Amrahia, will produce 50,000 metric tonnes of fish within five years and provide training and start-up support to 300 aquaculture entrepreneurs. It is expected to create job opportunities, improve income security, and reduce poverty. Ghana imports over 600,000 metric tonnes of fish annually, with aquaculture identified as a solution to the gap between local catch and demand. The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development (MoFAD) is implementing strategies to increase aquaculture production and combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, which costs the country over US$80 million annually.
