The United States had 11.1 million head of cattle and calves for slaughter as of Aug. 1, 2024, slightly above the previous year, according to the USDA NASS report. Placements in feedlots in July were 6% higher than in 2023, at 1.70 million head. Marketings of fed cattle also increased by 8% compared to the previous year. However, other disappearance was 14% lower than in 2023. DTN Livestock Analyst ShayLe Stewart noted that the placement numbers were higher than expected due to ample feed resources and market incentives, as well as a 27% increase in Mexican feeder cattle imports. Despite the report, live and feeder cattle contracts traded higher on Monday.
