In 2023, China's fishmeal imports from Peru, its main supplier, dropped by over 50% to 430,202 tonnes due to an El Niño-induced anchovy shortage. This led to an increase in production from other countries like Vietnam, Russia, Thailand, and India, resulting in a 29% rise in China's fishmeal imports outside Peru to 1.2 million tons. However, this could potentially lead to overexploitation of fish stocks. The average import price of fishmeal in China reached a record high since 2000, at US$1,766 per tonne.
