In 2024, Vietnamese durian has seen significant growth in export markets, with China leading as the dominant market, accounting for over 90% of exports valued at over $2.8 billion, marking a 43% increase from the previous year. Thailand, Hong Kong, and Japan also contribute to the demand, with Thailand's imports valued at $177 million, a increase of 82%. This surge has contributed to a total fruit and vegetable export value of approximately $7.2 billion. Looking ahead, Vietnamese durian exports are projected to further grow in 2025, with an emphasis on meeting plant quarantine and food safety requirements for the Chinese market. However, the industry faces challenges such as the need to improve quality, compete with high-quality Thai durian, and contend with increased competition from Malaysia, which begins exporting fresh durian to China in 2025. Vietnam's durian planting area spans about 155,000 hectares, leading to concerns of oversupply and quality issues, calling for strategic planning, investment in modern agriculture, and adherence to export standards to ensure sustainable growth in the industry.
