Vietnam has spent over $1.55 billion on meat imports in the past 11 months, with the majority of the meat coming from India, the US, Russia, and Germany. The imported meat, particularly frozen pork and chicken, is preferred due to its lower prices compared to domestic meat. However, the influx of imported meat also raises concerns about food safety, with over 1% of imported meat shipments found to be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria. The African swine fever epidemic, which has decreased the domestic meat supply and increased prices, has further fueled the demand for imported meat.
