Vietnam seeks to ease concerns for dragon fruit and pepper exports

Tridge summary

According to reports, since early July, Vietnam's export activities of fruits and vegetables to the European Union (EU) have encountered severe obstacles. Among them, multiple batches of goods, including dragon fruit, chili peppers, and okra, have been held up due to the lack of documents that meet EU standards.

As a significant consumer market for high-quality dragon fruit, the EU has issued a warning that if Vietnam cannot deliver on time, it will turn to other suppliers. Not only dragon fruit, but the pepper industry has also issued a warning.

According to the Vietnam Pepper and Spices Association (VPSA), currently, there are approximately 250 tons of spices awaiting approval, valued at about $2.4 million. If delays continue, the economic losses will be very severe.

In response, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has issued the following directive:

The Minister of Agriculture and Environment and the Chairman of the People's Committee of Lam Dong Province should guide relevant specialized agencies to immediately resolve the issues of exporting dragon fruit and pepper to the EU.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment should promptly issue and guide the necessary documents and procedures for exporting agricultural products, especially dragon fruit and pepper, to obtain certification, ensuring compliance with the requirements of the import market, particularly the EU; timely research and propose solutions to address the difficulties and problems encountered by enterprises and localities in handling agricultural product export procedures; actively coordinate with relevant ministries and localities to ensure that qualified agricultural products can be exported in a timely manner, avoiding backlog, waste, disruption of the supply chain, and damage to the trust of international partners.

The People's Committees of centrally-administered cities and provinces should immediately implement the tasks assigned in Notification No. 12/2025/TT-BNNMT issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment on June 19, 2025. (End)
