Vietnam's Path to Prosperity: The Turmeric Cultivation Model in Tuyen Quang Province

Published 2025년 8월 29일

Tridge summary

Farmers in Mingyu and Mingshan have been planting turmeric for many years. In the past, people mainly grew it for family use, with some selling to merchants. However, due to a lack of information, the sales channels for turmeric were unstable, often resulting in low prices, and sometimes even causing turmeric to remain unsold, leading to it being piled up by the roadside.

Ms. Chen Shiliu, the manager of the Yushan Comprehensive Agriculture and Forestry Cooperative, said: "After conducting research, I learned that turmeric can be used to produce many products that are very beneficial to human health, especially naturally grown turmeric. So I came up with the idea of starting a business by connecting local people to engage in turmeric planting and starch production."

After conducting long-term research, in 2015, Ms. Chen Shiliu decided to invest tens of billions of Vietnamese dong in building a turmeric starch production factory. Since turmeric is naturally grown and of high quality, the turmeric starch sold well. In the first year of the trial, the 5-picul batch of turmeric starch produced by the cooperative was completely sold out.

Building on the initial success, in 2016, Ms. Chen Shiliu established the Yushan Comprehensive Agriculture and Forestry Cooperative, expanding the scale of cooperation with farmers and enhancing production capacity. From the initial crude processing of starch, by 2018, the cooperative had invested in installing a modernized turmeric starch extraction production line, including grinding machines, drying machines, packaging machines, starch sedimentation equipment, and new processing areas and drying factories, as well as renovating and upgrading the raw material warehouses. Since then, the modernized production line has successively launched dozens of turmeric products.

Ms. Chen Shiliu introduced that in the process of implementing the turmeric starch production linkage model, the cooperative ensured that the product quality met relevant regulations, including product trademark registration, barcode identification, product quality inspection qualification, and obtaining food hygiene and safety certification. The cooperative also received support from local governments and relevant departments, such as support for the turmeric starch processing and production line, product packaging design consultation, and promotion, which gradually increased the recognition of turmeric starch nationwide. As of now, the cooperative has 9 turmeric products that have been rated as three to four-star One Village One Product (OCOP) products. In recent years, the cooperative's annual operating income has remained between 30 billion and 50 billion Vietnamese dong.

Currently, the cooperative has established cooperative relationships with approximately 80 households in Mingyu and Mingshan, forming an area of about 100 hectares of raw material zones. The cooperative provides farmers with seedlings, fertilizers, and technical guidance, and purchases all products at prices not lower than the market price. Each year, the cooperative purchases about 500 tons of fresh turmeric at a price of 4000 to 6000 Vietnamese dong per kilogram. Currently, the cooperative is in talks with partners about the possibility of exporting to the U.S. market. Therefore, in the coming years, the cooperative will continue to expand the scale of its linkages, increase investment in machinery and equipment, and diversify its product range.

The cooperative model of turmeric planting has helped many impoverished families of ethnic minorities achieve stable income. A typical example is the family of Ms. Mei Meime from Bopeng Village, Mingshan County. By converting some low-yielding corn fields into turmeric planting on hillside gardens, they have also achieved stable income every year. Ms. Mei Meime said: "After participating in the cooperative model, my family not only received support for seedlings and fertilizers but also received technical guidance, so the turmeric grows well. Nearly one hectare of turmeric brings my family an income of over 50 million Vietnamese dong annually. Compared to other crops, turmeric is easy to grow, requires less labor for management, has fewer pests and diseases, and has a high selling price..."
