Moldova is set to begin its walnut harvest about ten days earlier than usual, with the early variety Peschansky reaching technical ripeness. The Union of Associations of Walnut Producers of Moldova expects a faster harvesting and pre-sale preparation process this year due to an increase in walnut farms with simple installations for washing and drying, and the early start of harvesting. The quality of the early walnuts is above average, but a significant amount has a useful fruit with a drying pericarp, which requires prompt post-harvest processing to prevent kernel darkening and a sweet aftertaste. Some walnut farms are expected to receive study missions from potential buyers in Italy and Slovakia.
