Wando County, creation of a blue carbon halophyte forest

Wando County in Jeonnam Province has created a Zostera marina (eelgrass) intermediate breeding area. The Zostera marina intermediate breeding project was carried out in collaboration between Wando County, the Fisheries Resources Agency (FIRA), and the fishing community. Through a site survey in October last year, the areas of Yangcheon-ri in Sinji-myeon and Bongam-ri in Gogeum-myeon were selected as the project sites. After planting Zostera marina seeds in the project areas, once they grow to about 30 cm, the seeds will be harvested and transplanted to a larger area. On January 26, 300,000 Zostera marina seeds were planted in a 6-hectare area of Sinji-myeon and Gogeum-myeon. Zostera marina forms forests along the coast, providing spawning and habitat for marine organisms and acting as a "blue carbon" (carbon absorption through marine ecosystems) by absorbing and storing carbon dioxide, playing an important role in responding to climate change.
