Kenyan papaya farmers are combating the papaya mealybug pest, which has been causing significant economic losses, by using parasitic wasps. The wasps, originally identified in Ghana by CABI and local Kenyan research organizations, provide a natural and safe solution to the problem. The parasitic wasp, Acerophagus papaya, was successfully introduced on Bolo's farm in March 2023 and has controlled the mealybug numbers, resulting in increased plant production and reduced pesticide costs for the farmer. The use of Acerophagus papayae is expected to be expanded to other counties, and specialists remain hopeful despite concerns of mealybug resistance. This approach is seen as a welcome relief for farmers in Baringo county, where the mealybug pest has caused widespread losses.
