Japan's Department of Livestock Development has issued the country's first bird flu alert this winter following an outbreak at a poultry farm in Yokote Akita Prefecture. The farm lost over 143,000 laying hens due to the H5N1, H5N6, and H5N8 strains of the avian influenza. In response, the Department is implementing strict surveillance, movement restrictions, and biosecurity measures to prevent the spread of the disease. Farmers are encouraged to report any unusual symptoms in birds and to follow strict protocols for carcass movement and importation of animals. The Department is also considering cooperation with domestic and international agencies to further control the spread of the disease.
