(Seoul=Yonhap News) = Some agricultural products like watermelons and cucumbers that consumers frequently purchase during summer have risen more than 20% compared to a year ago.

According to the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation's (aT) agricultural product distribution information (KAMIS), the retail price of watermelons was 26,209 won per piece as of the previous day, up 27.2% from a year ago.

Compared to the average price over the past three years (excluding the maximum and minimum prices from 2020 to last year), the price is 32.3% higher.

The watermelon price increase is due to reduced sunlight last month delaying watermelon growth and increased demand during the hot weather.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs expects watermelon supply to increase after mid-month.

Cucumbers and zucchinis have seen price increases due to growth delays from the hot weather.

Cucumber (spiny variety) retail prices were 11,781 won for 10 pieces, up 25.6% and 29.0% compared to a year ago and the average price, respectively.

Zucchini retail prices were 1,404 won per piece, up 25.1% and 15.7% compared to a year ago and the average price.

Egg prices are showing strength.

The average retail price for 30 eggs (special grade) from the 1st to 9th of this month was 7,089 won, up 9.4% from the same period last year (6,479 won).

The Ministry of Agriculture attributes the egg price increase to rising consumption.

A ministry official stated, "The estimated daily average egg production from January to May increased by 1.0% compared to the same period last year, while consumption increased by 2.3%."

They added, "Consumption is expected to decrease by about 6% in July and August due to vacation season and reduced meal service demand, and egg production is forecast to stabilize from September."

Chicken meat's average retail price from the 1st to 9th of this month was 5,843 won per kg, down 3.4% from the same period last year (6,047 won).
