Weather watch will soon begin in Canada: Lobster season prepares for opening in southwestern NS

The preseason weather calls will begin on Nov. 22 to determine when Dumping Day will be held for the commercial lobster fishery in Lobster Fishing Areas (LFAs) 33 and 34. Scheduled to open on Monday, Nov. 25 (the last Monday of November is the traditional start day of the season) the season could open if needed on Sunday, Nov. 24 in both fishing districts, depending on weather. The weather can also push back and delay the season opening. “This year, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) policy allows for one day of flexibility for LFAs 33 and 34 to open early if poor weather could impact the opening of the LFAs on their scheduled opening date,” says DFO communications. “The decision on whether to advance or delay the opening date considers weather forecasts provided by Environment Canada, and advice from the LFA advisory committees."
