Bulgaria is facing a threat to its walnut production due to the expansion of the Asian walnut moth and the walnut fly in Europe. These pests, originally from Central Asia and North America, have been affecting walnut-growing countries like Ukraine, Turkey, and Romania. The Asian walnut moth causes up to 80% yield loss by damaging young shoots and fruits, while the walnut fly leaves nuts vulnerable to rot, reducing their market value. The National Agricultural Advisory Service (NAA) of Bulgaria has highlighted the importance of integrated pest management strategies, including trap monitoring and biological control, to address these pests. The NAA also announced that small farms can receive consulting services on sustainable agricultural practices and business development to combat these threats.
