Germany's asparagus crop for 2024 is expected to decrease by 6% from 2023, making it the smallest crop since 2013 with a projected volume of 105.2 thousand tons. This represents a 13% decrease compared to the six-year average from 2018 to 2023. The harvestable area for open field asparagus is predicted to decrease by 4%, covering 19.6 thousand hectares. The early harvest has faced challenges due to excessive rainfall and late frosts, and farming operations have also had to contend with rising production costs, inflation, and reduced demand, leading to a reduction in the cultivation area not only for asparagus but also for strawberries. The majority of the asparagus harvest takes place in Lower Saxony, with significant contributions from Brandenburg and North Rhine-Westphalia.
