Wheat flour has been designated as an essential commodity in Sri Lanka, according to a gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Trade, Commerce and Food Security on June 16, 2023. This move, aimed at curbing the rise in wheat flour prices, falls under the Consumer Affairs Authority Act of 2003. The government has also introduced a licensing requirement for wheat flour imports. Additionally, the notification removing Liquefied Petroleum Gas as an essential item, effective July 8, 2022, has been annulled.
