Prices of essential items such as pulses, sugar, and flattened rice have decreased at the wholesale level in Bangladesh's largest consumer goods market, Khatunganj, by 5% to 15% since the start of Ramadan. However, these price reductions have not been passed on to retail customers. The situation arose as importers increased prices in anticipation of high demand before Ramadan, only to see a decline in sales thereafter. The country has imported over 1.5 lakh tonnes of chickpeas in the first two and a half months of 2023, more than twice the annual demand, leading to concerns about storage and significant losses for importers.
