China and Zimbabwe have signed an export protocol agreement, marking a significant step towards allowing Zimbabwe to export fresh citrus fruits to China, making it the first fresh fruit product from Zimbabwe to be exported to China and the fifth African nation to be approved for such export. The process, which began in 2015, involves additional preparations before the General Administration of Customs of China adds Zimbabwean citrus to its list of permissible fresh fruit imports. The exported citrus types could include oranges, mandarins, lemons, limes, tangelos, and grapefruits. Currently, Zimbabwe's citrus exports are primarily focused on Europe, but with the new agreement, China's market could provide significant demand, leading to calls for increased production and planting in Zimbabwe.
